What is the MOT Test?

The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is an annual examination required by law for vehicles in the UK that are three years old or older. The test typically takes 1 hour and assesses the safety, roadworthiness, and environmental impact of your vehicle.

  • Vehicle Identification: The examiner will check the registration plate, vehicle identification number (VIN), and ensure they meet the required standards.

  • Lights and Signaling: All external lights, including headlights, indicators, brake lights, and fog lights, will be examined for functionality and alignment.

  • Steering and Suspension: The steering mechanism and suspension components will be inspected for wear, damage, and proper functioning.

  • Brakes: The braking system, including the pedal, discs, pads, and ABS, will be thoroughly examined to ensure they meet the required standards.

  • Tyres and Wheels: Tyres will be checked for tread depth, condition, and suitability, while wheels will be inspected for damage or distortion.

  • Seat Belts: All seat belts and their mountings will be tested for functionality and security.

  • Body and Structure: The vehicle's body condition, including the doors, bonnet, boot, and chassis, will be examined for corrosion, damage, or excessive wear.

  • Exhaust Emissions: The exhaust system will undergo emissions testing to determine if it complies with the environmental standards.

  • Fuel System: The fuel system, including the tank, pipes, and hoses, will be assessed for leaks and proper functioning.

  • Electrical Systems: The battery and any visible wiring is inspected for signs of possible hazards, damage or corrosion.

Results and What they Mean

Pass: Congratulations! If your vehicle passes the MOT test, it meets all the necessary requirements for safety and roadworthiness. You will receive an MOT certificate, and you can continue driving with peace of mind until the next test is due.

Pass with Advisories: Your car has passed the MOT but with ‘minor faults’.  We recommend that you treat advisories as warnings. Advisories indicate some issues with the vehicle which will need addressing in the future, but which are not serious enough to fail the test.  Typical advisories might be that the tyres are close to the legal limit and will need to be replaced soon, or that brake pads are showing signs of wear. Ignoring advisories for a long period will most likely result in your car failing its next MOT test.

Failure: If your vehicle fails the MOT test, it means there are issues which require urgent attention. You will receive a document called the VT30 which outlines the reasons for failure.  You have 10 working days from the date of the MOT test to bring your car back for a Re-test free of charge, where the items which failed the text will be re-examined.  If the issues for failure have been rectified, a pass certificate will be issued.  If the 10 day period lapses, a full MOT will need to be carried out again and the full test fee will be payable again.

TIPS:  How to Prepare for your MOT

Preparing your vehicle before the MOT test can increase your chances of a successful outcome. Follow these tips from to ensure your car is in the best possible condition for the examination:

1. Lights and Signals:

  • Check that all your lights are working correctly, including headlights, indicators, brake lights, fog lights, and reversing lights.

  • Clean the light lenses to ensure maximum visibility.

2. Tyres and Wheels:

  • Inspect your tires for adequate tread depth (minimum 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tire) and any signs of damage.

  • Make sure all tires are correctly inflated, including the spare.

  • Check the condition of your wheels, looking for cracks, bends, or other damage.

3. Brakes:

  • Test your brakes to ensure they are functioning correctly. Listen for unusual noises or vibrations and pay attention to any changes in brake pedal feel.

  • If your brakes feel spongy or less responsive, it may be a sign of a problem. Get them inspected by a professional.

4. Windscreen and Wipers:

  • Inspect your windscreen for any cracks or chips that could obstruct the driver's view. If necessary, repair or replace it.

  • Ensure your wiper blades are in good condition and effectively clear the windscreen.

5. Fluid Levels:

  • Check your engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and washer fluid levels. Top up if necessary.

  • If you're unsure how to check or add fluids, refer to your vehicle's owner's manual or consult a mechanic.

6. Mirrors and Visibility:

  • Ensure all mirrors are securely fixed and correctly adjusted for optimal visibility.

  • Clean all windows, inside and out, to remove dirt, streaks, or obstructions.

7. Horn:

  • Test your horn to ensure it's working properly. If it's weak or not sounding at all, it may need to be repaired or replaced.

8. Seat Belts:

  • Ensure that all seat belts are in good working order. Check for any fraying, stiffness, or damage. If needed, have them replaced.

9. Registration Plate:

  • Check that your registration plate is securely attached, clean, and easily readable. Ensure it meets the required standards.

10. General Maintenance:

  • Keep up with routine vehicle maintenance, such as oil changes, filter replacements, and regular servicing. This helps identify and address potential issues before they become problematic during the MOT test.
